Has anybody read any thought-provoking, bust-a-gut hilarious books lately? I've been reading classics on my kindle until they are coming out of my wazoo. I need a break, but I'm not looking for fluff.

  1. If you haven't read it I still think you'd like Hitching Rides With Buddha by Ferguson ... even though you live there. Or his Beauty Tips From Moosejaw.

  2. Ken - Thanks. I'll take a look and see if I can get it on my kindle. The titles sure are thought-provoking and humourous! Especially the second one!

  3. "Hitchhiking Rides with Buddha" was not available in Kindle format; however "Beauty Tips" is.

The problem with this e-book thing is this.... And I can sum it up in a nutshell:

    Paperback New: $1.97
    Hardcover Used: $0.01
    Kindle Edition: $11.99 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now why on earth would I want to pay twelve dollars for an electronic version which is loaded with scanner errors, no formatting, and generally poor readable quality (you get used to the mistakes after time) when I can get a hardcover for ONE FUCKING PENNY or 1/1200 of the price of kindle?!?!?!?!??!?!

This happens with the majority of kindle books. They are either the same price as paperback new, or more expensive in many cases. It is frustrating.

  4. I'm trying desperately to reduce my collection of physical books... the move from Fukui to Tokyo, and the subsequent rental of a "trunk room" (storage) off-site to store the books I don't want to get rid of but don't need near me was depressing. This apartment was full of books!

But sheesh this price gap makes it difficult to switch over!

  6. Paula - The library here doesn't have English books. They have english magazines, but they can't be taken out. I live in Japan, a monolingual society.

  7. Yeah, even libraries on base are disturbingly out of date and based mostly on user donations...

Maybe try Sh*t My Dad Says? It's probably more on the fluff side than thought provoking - though it does make you consider your own family history... and uh, what it's like to live well outside the realm of the politically correct. Though the hardcover is cheaper than the kindle version at the moment.

  8. If you want a very very funny, but smartly written book, I really recommend Richard Russo's "Straight Man", about an English Professor who loses it. It's awesomeness.

Or you could read my book: http://stores.lulu.com/catie_atkinson
