Status of quake-stricken reactors at Fukushima nuclear power plants

The following is the known status as of Wednesday afternoon of each of the
six reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant and the four reactors at
the Fukushima No. 2 plant, both in Fukushima Prefecture, which were crippled by
Friday’s magnitude 9.0 earthquake and the ensuing tsunami.

Fukushima No. 1 plant

—Reactor No. 1 - Cooling failure, partial melting of core, vapor vented,
building damaged Saturday by hydrogen explosion, seawater being pumped in.

—Reactor No. 2 - Cooling failure, seawater being pumped in, fuel rods fully
exposed temporarily, vapor vented, building damaged Monday by blast at Reactor
No. 3, damage to containment vessel on Tuesday, potential meltdown feared.

—Reactor No. 3 - Cooling failure, partial melting of core feared, vapor
vented, seawater being pumped in, building damaged Monday by hydrogen explosion,
high-level radiation measured nearby on Tuesday, plume of smoke observed
Wednesday, damage to containment vessel likely.

—Reactor No. 4 - Under maintenance when quake struck, fire Tuesday possibly
caused by hydrogen explosion at pool holding spent fuel rods, pool water level
not observed, fire observed Wednesday at building housing reactor, no water
poured in to cool pool.

—Reactor No. 5, No. 6 - Under maintenance when quake struck, temperature
slightly rising in spent fuel pool.

Fukushima No. 2 plant

—Reactor No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 - Cooling failure, then cold shutdown.

—Reactor No. 3 - Cold shutdown.

  3. *snaps fingers* that's it !
we can use hamsters to run exercise wheels to pump water to cool the reactors....breed them later....then japan can export genetically modified (by radiation) hamsters later as novelty items.

  4. They will have no natural predators, these genetically modified hamsters, and will therefore overrun the countries of import. A new disaster will begin. Something like 'Armageddon Day', except it will be hamsters, not cockroaches.

Or... Maybe they will become famous like the Mutant Ninja Turtles did. I wonder what super abilities they would possess? Running at incredibly high speeds?

  5. could solve the radioactive waste problem too...feed it to the radioactive hamsters :)

  6. see there ???
a little bit of thought and we've solved the worlds energy problems

  7. And more! Heck, by that time we will have become brainwashed that GMO food is actually GOOD for us, so the GMO hamster can replace the cattle as it will have grown considerably in size. And we will have our own food source as well. Yet another energy issue solved.

I bet Bill Gates couldn't have come up with something this brilliant!

  8. Having lived with a siberian husky for several months now I can tell you that while hamsters may be excellent for providing power for the monitors and possibly charging cell phones, but for the greater metropolitan areas of Japan, I highly recommend huskies on treadmills.

    My dog. Never. Stops.

He walks, he runs, he leaps, he jumps, he loves fetch, he bounces the ball himself when we get tired, and he can pull me around the neighborhood on skates.

    Huskies. *nods* Energy crisis averted.

Though the hamsters might be able to power the espresso machines too.

    Mmm. Coffee.

  9. hook up a monitor with a running rabbit display
modify the treadmill by attaching a small generator to it
and let him wear himself out *chuckles* i'll have to try that !!

  10. Oh, I know. Huskies... Toyota should put them in the bonnet of their new vehicle and call it the Husky.

Can we eat Huskies if we overbreed them? Can we easily GMO them?
